Every May, something that looks a lot like a natural disaster hits Florida\u2019s storage market. In the span of about two weeks, more than 450,000 college students simultaneously vacate dorms and apartments across Orlando, Miami<\/a>, Gainesville, Tampa<\/a>, Tallahassee, and Fort Lauderdale. All looking for somewhere to stash a futon, a mini-fridge, and four months of accumulated life, at exactly the same moment.<\/p>

The students who plan ahead find what they need close to campus at a fair price. The ones who wait find out the hard way what\u2019s left.<\/p>

\u201cThe well-matched units go first \u2014 the right size, close to where students live, at a reasonable price,\u201d says D\u2019Arcy Hunter, President & CEO of FindStorageFast, which tracks live pricing across 15,000+ storage facilities in North America. \u201cWhat\u2019s left near the end of term is usually either too small to be useful or a 10\u00d720 that costs three times what a student actually needs. The numbers behind Florida\u2019s annual student storage crunch are striking. The Orlando metro alone \u2014 home to UCF, Valencia College, and Rollins \u2014 sees more than 111,000 students move out in a narrow window each spring. Miami\u2019s universities, including FIU, UM, and Miami Dade College, account for over 103,000 students. Gainesville (University of Florida, 56,000+), Tampa (USF, 50,000+), Tallahassee<\/a> (FSU and FAMU combined, 65,000+), and Fort Lauderdale (FAU, NSU, 40,000+) round out a statewide demand wave that hits within the same two-week window every year.<\/p>

To put that in perspective: 450,000 students moving simultaneously is more people on the move than the entire population of Miami. Or Orlando. Or Tampa. Any one of those cities on its own. That\u2019s a lot of futons.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Here\u2019s something most students don\u2019t know going in: a typical dorm room\u2019s worth of belongings \u2014 bed, desk chair, mini-fridge, clothes, boxes \u2014 fits comfortably in a 5\u00d75 storage unit. That\u2019s the size of a large closet, and for most students, it\u2019s genuinely all they need.<\/p>

The problem is that most students rent too big, either because they don\u2019t know that, or because the right-sized units near campus are already gone by the time they start looking.<\/p>

But here\u2019s the real hack. If you and your roommate each need a 5\u00d75, don\u2019t book two of them. One 5\u00d710 is exactly the same total square footage \u2014 and it costs less than two separate 5\u00d75s. In Miami, two 5\u00d75 units average $110-130 combined per month. One shared 5\u00d710 runs $85-95. Split two ways that\u2019s $42-47 each \u2014 roughly half what each student would pay going solo. The numbers are similar in Orlando: two 5\u00d75s average $70-100 combined, one shared 5\u00d710 runs $55-75, or $27-37 per person.<\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s the simplest money-saving move in student storage and almost nobody does it,\u201d says Hunter. \u201cYou just have to think of it before you\u2019re packing boxes.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For students who wait until moving day to sort out storage, the options narrow quickly. By the time exams end and the panic sets in, the conversation with mom and dad tends to go one of three ways: do we pay for a 10\u00d720 because that\u2019s all that\u2019s left near campus? Do we rent a UHaul and drive everything home? Or do we just leave it on the curb and buy new stuff in September?<\/p>\n

None of those options are cheap. None of them are fun. And all three of them are entirely avoidable with a few minutes of planning three or four weeks before move-out day.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery spring we watch the same thing happen,\u201d Hunter says. \u201cStudents who book ahead get a unit that actually fits their stuff, close to campus, at a price that makes sense. Students who wait until the last week of exams are making increasingly bad choices under pressure.
